ISO/IEC/IEEE International Draft Systems and software engineering--Content of life-cycle information items (documentation)
Summary
Revision Standard - Active - Draft.
The purpose and content of systems and software engineering life cycle information items (documentation) and data records are specified in this document. The information item contents are defined according to generic document types (description, plan, policy, procedure, report, request, and specification) and the specific purpose of the document. This document provides partial or complete outlines for the content of specific documents. Information items may be combined or subdivided as needed for project or organizational purposes. It provides a cross-reference of the set of information items and records to clauses in ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288:2023 system engineering life cycle processes and ISO/IEC/IEEE 12207:2026 software engineering life cycle processes.
This document specifies the purpose and required and recommended content of systems and software life-cycle and services information items (information products, documentation). This document assumes an organization is performing life-cycle processes, or delivering services, using either ISO/IEC/ IEEE 12207:2025, Systems and software engineering -- Software life cycle processes, or ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288:2023, Systems and software engineering -- System life cycle processes. This document provides a mapping of processes from those standards to a set of information items. It provides a consistent approach to meeting the information and documentation requirements of systems and software engineering and life-cycle services. It is applicable for organizations using traditional document management or content management systems or advanced model-based systems and software engineering (MBSSE) to integrate project and systems data for use in preparing artefacts for system use and information for human use.
The users of this document are responsible for selecting a life cycle model for the project or organization, and mapping the processes, activities, and tasks in this document into that model. The parties are also responsible for selecting and applying appropriate methodologies, methods, models, and techniques suitable for the project.
The information item contents are defined according to generic document types and the specific purpose of the information item. The generic document types defined in this document are used to identify the information necessary to support the ISO/IEC/IEEE 12207 and ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288 agreement; organizational project-enabling, technical management, and technical processes. Thus, information items can be combined, subdivided, and updated to be consistent with the life cycle model, as needed for project or organizational purposes.
