Preface This is the first edition of CSA K100, Food loss and waste — Terminology and measurement . The intent of this Standard is to create a common framework for defining food loss and waste in Canada, and to ensure consistency of approach in calculating a) the amount of food loss and waste generated; and b) the amount of food loss and waste diverted and/or managed. Standardizing these processes allows for data on food loss and waste to be compared, ensures a clear understanding of the impact of setting any food loss and waste reduction targets, and improves confidence in the accuracy of any reported statistics on food loss and waste management. This Standard was prepared by the Technical Committee on Food Loss and Waste, under the jurisdiction of the Strategic Steering Committee on Agriculture and Agri-food, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee. This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It is published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group. Scope 1.1 General This Standard provides a framework, including terms and definitions pertaining to food loss and waste (FLW), to provide a consistent and national approach across the food supply chain. This Standard also provides requirements and guidance for measurement and characterization of food loss and waste, data collection and monitoring, and the evaluation of the associated environmental impacts to help provide quantifiable and comparable information. Application of consistent terminology and measurement is intended to assist organizations with benchmarking and the adoption of leading practices to reduce food loss and waste, as well as supporting the development of circular bio-economy business models. 1.2 Users This Standard is intended for a) any organization (for-profit or non-profit) that is part of the food supply chain, from primary producers through to final marketers involved in retail or foodservice, and those involved in redistribution; and b) any organization engaged in the management or disposal of FLW. This Standard may also be used by other interested parties, including governments at the federal, provincial/territorial, and municipal levels, as well as non-governmental organizations. This Standard is not intended for use by consumers or households. 1.3 Terminology In this Standard, "shall" is used to express a requirement, that is, a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; "should" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and "may" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.
