Preface This is the second edition of CSA C22.2 No. 250.2, Lighting systems , one of a series of Standards issued by CSA Group under Part II of the Canadian Electrical Code. It supersedes the previous edition published in 2020. The following are the major changes to this edition: a) scope modifications (see Clauses 1.3and 1.4); b) safety functions incorporating electronic technology (see Clause 4.101and Annex AA); c) enclosures (see Clause 5.3); d) decorative parts (see Clause 5.7); e) supply connections for luminaires (see Clauses 6.16.1.1and 6.16.2.1); f) separation of circuits where separate conductors are used for power and signal (see Clause 6.18.2.101); g) protective devices (see Clauses 6.101.3and 18.102); h) additional requirements for Class 2 luminaires intended to be mounted independently of an outlet box (see Clauses 11.2.101to 11.2.106and 17.15.103, and Table 20.101.1); i) clarification for strain relief requirements (see Clauses 5.15, 6.16.1.3, 13.101.4.3, and 17.101.1); j) revisions to surface-mounted and recessed luminaire construction requirements (see Clauses 11.6, 12.3, and 12.5.1); k) restructuring of Clause 13.101and adding requirements for surface-mounted power units (see Clause 13.101); l) temperature test adjustments (see Clauses 15.1.4, and 15.1.101to 15.1.104); m) revision to the power supply unit abnormal operation tests (see Clauses 16.102.1.1, 16.102.2.1, 16.102.2.2, 16.102.2.7, 16.102.3, 16.102.4, and 16.102.5); n) maximum input (see Clause 18.103.1); o) equipment with batteries (see Clauses 6.101.2.1, 13.103, 15.103, 18.104, and 18.105, and Table 20.101.1); p) modifications for markings (see Clauses 2, 20.1.101, 20.2.4, 20.2.5, and 20.2.6, and Table 20.101.1); q) updates in accordance with CSA 250.0 (see Clauses 5.19and 5.20, and Annexes Jand K); r) cable lighting systems (see Clause 13.104); and s) editorial revisions (see Clauses 6.9.2, 6.9.7, 6.101.1.2, 6.101.2.2, 16.103.2.2, and 20.101.1, and Table 6.9.101.1). This Standard contains specific requirements for lighting systems and is intended to be used together with the requirements for luminaires contained in CSA C22.2 No. 250.0. This Standard is considered suitable for use for conformity assessment within the stated scope of the Standard. This Standard was prepared by the Integrated Committee on Lighting Products, under the jurisdiction of the Technical Committee on Consumer and Commercial Products and the Strategic Steering Committee on Requirements for Electrical Safety, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee. This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group. Scope 1.1 This Standard applies to lighting systems equipment that performs a sensing and/or signalling function, to convey data through wired or wireless means to, or from, other components of a field installed lighting system. This equipment is rated at 600 V or less, for commercial, industrial, or residential applications, and intended to be installed in non-hazardous locations in accordance with CSA C22.1, Canadian Electrical Code (CE Code), Part I. 1.2 These requirements cover a) power source equipment, and luminaires that are part of a lighting system; b) luminaires and its remote components connected to Class 2 power and data communication circuits (power over ethernet); and c) extra-low-voltage lighting systems incorporating a power supply, luminaires, and bare or insulated conductors. 1.3 This Standard does not apply to luminaires covered by other applicable CSA Standards, such as a) Decorative lighting products, C22.2 No. 37; b) Retrofit kits for luminaire conversion, C22.2 No. 250.1; c) Emergency lighting equipment, C22.2. No. 141; d) Stage and studio luminaires, C22.2 No. 166; e) Portable and stationary electric signs and displays, C22.2 No. 207; f) Extra-low-voltage landscape lighting systems, C22.2 No. 250.7; g) Swimming-pool luminaires, submersible luminaires, and accessories, C22.2 No. 89; h) Portable luminaires, C22.2 No. 250.4; i) Track lighting, C22.2 No. 250.570; j) Direct plug-in nightlights, C22.2 No. 256; k) Flashlights and lanterns, C22.2 No. 250.5; and l) Horticultural lighting applications and systems, ANSI/CAN/UL 8800. 1.4 The requirements specified in this Standard do not cover light-emitting diode assemblies, components, or controls that are applicable to CSA C22.2 No. 250.13. 1.5 This Standard is intended to be used in conjunction with the applicable clauses of CSA C22.2 No. 250.0 and its subsequent revisions. 1.6 In this Standard, “shall” is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; “should” is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and “may” is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements.
