Preface This is the first edition of No. 173 of a series of Standards issued by Canadian Standards Association under Part II of the Canadian Electrical Code. This Standard supersedes Section C of CSA Standard C22.2 No. 66, Specialty Transformers . For general information on the Standards of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part II, seethe preface of CSA Standard C22.2 No. 0, General Requirements — Canadian Electrical Code, Part II. This Standard was prepared under the jurisdiction of the CSA Standards Steering Committee on CE Code, Part II, and was formally approved by both this Committee and its Technical Committee on Industrial Products. This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group. Scope 1.1 This Standard applies to cord connected and direct plug-in transformers* for use indoors, designed to be used on a nominal 120-V branch circuit in nonhazardous locations in accordance with the Rules of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I, and intended to supply power for the operation of extra-low voltage toys or hobby equipment. *For convenience, the shorter term "transformer" is used throughout the Standard. Note: Since it is recognized that transformers may be subjected to careless use and probable short-circuit of the output terminals, the requirements herein recognize that increased fire and shock hazards may be involved. The design requirements, therefore, are intended to reduce fire hazards such as the ignition of nearby combustible materials caused by overheating or burnout of the transformer, and any shock hazard under conditions of normal or abnormal use. 1.2 This Standard does not apply to toys or the like designed to operate from the output of a transformer. This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group.
