Summary
1.1 This test method describes the procedures for performing a sieve analysis to determine the particle size distribution of granular infill materials used in artificial turf surface systems. Examples of materials suitable for testing under this method include, but may not be limited to, infill materials made from rubber, thermoplastic polymers, cork, the pits or seeds of stonefruits, the shells of tree nuts, and wood.
1.2 Fibrous materials that are not readily separable via mechanical sieving, particle size analyses involving the use of image analysis (for example, using a computer particle analyzer), and wet sieving are outside the scope of this standard. Fibrous materials would include infills made using coconut coir/fiber (in blends or as a pure component) and, more generally, any infill containing material that can become entangled and prevent the infill from flowing freely when poured.

Significance and Use:
5.1 This test method may be used to characterize the particle size distribution of granular infill materials used in artificial turf surface systems.
5.2 This test method may also be used for the purposes of process control and product quality control during infill production.
5.3 This test method may be used to determine whether the particle size distribution of the infill material complies with particle size requirements (for example, field design specifications, specifications provided by the infill producer, etc.), provided that those requirements reference this test method.
5.4 Results obtained from this test may also be useful in developing a better understanding of the relationships between the particle size characteristics of the infill material and various properties of the turf surface system (for example, water permeability, impact attenuation, footing and traction, etc.).
