ASTM D8654-26
Summary
1.1 This practice covers specific guidelines to conduct lifecycle assessments (LCA) for recovered carbon black (rCB).
1.2 Units—The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.
1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Significance and Use:
3.1 In Annex A1, the interim product category rules (PCR) that shall be followed to create cradle-to-gate lifecycle assessments (LCA) for recovered carbon black (rCB) are given. The background process to be followed to create the LCA is not included in this practice. Please refer to ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 for guidance on the methodology to be followed.
3.2 Although the LCA produced by this practice may be used in the creation of environmental product declarations (EPD) or product environmental footprints (PEF), creation of these types of documents is not within the scope of this practice.
3.3 The generation of LCAs for the tire pyrolysis oil (TPO) produced during the pyrolysis of rubber goods is not covered, although such processes will overlap.
3.4 Within this interim PCR, the following terminology is adopted:
3.4.1 The term “shall” is used to indicate what is obligatory.
3.4.2 The term “should” is used to indicate a recommendation rather than a requirement.
3.4.3 The term “may” or “can” is used to indicate an option that is permissible.
