Standard Test Method for Recovered Carbon Black—Transmittance of Toluene Extract

Summary

1.1 This test method covers the measurement of the degree of toluene discoloration caused by raw rCB and rCB extractables and is useful in controlling the thermal decomposition (pyrolysis) process of rubber goods into raw rCB and rCB. This measurement also provides a valuable product parameter for the user of the material, for example, for ESH regulations or purchasing specifications.

1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.

1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Significance and Use:

4.1 The toluene discoloration value provides an estimate of toluene-soluble discoloring residues present on raw rCB or rCB.

4.2 The level of toluene-soluble discoloring residues present on raw rCB or rCB is a key performance and differentiating parameter that is important to establish both during the production process and in the application of rCB.
