The ISO 14000 series is another set of popular ISO standards. Developed in March 1996, this series of standards help organizations of any type manage their environmental responsibilities by giving them the practical tools they need.
The core International Standard of the ISO 14000 series is the ISO 14001, which defines the criteria for an environmental management system.

The core standards of the ISO 14000 series
ISO 14001:2026 : Environmental management systems — Requirements with guidance for use.
ISO 14004:2016 : Environmental management systems — General guidelines on implementation
ISO 14005:2019 : Environmental management systems — Guidelines for a flexible approach to phased implementation
The ISO 14000 series of standards provide organizations of any type with the necessary tools to manage their environmental responsibilities.
While ISO 14001, which defines the criteria for an environmental management system, is the only standard in the series eligible to certification, it is supported and completed by other documents and standards to form the ISO 14000 series. Among said standards, you can find ISO 14004:2016 and ISO 14005:2019.

The ISO 14001 standard has just been revised. Linking environmental sustainability to companies' strategic goals, the update focuses on addressing new environmental challenges.
What does it mean and what are the changes?
This new edition maintains and reinforces several principles, while also adding new requirements, including but not confined to:
- a deeper consideration of emerging environmental issues,
- an in-depth analysis of the environmental risks and opportunities especially regarding climate change,
- an emphasis on leadership and the impact of management.
Organizations with ISO 14001:2019 certification will be granted a transition period to allow for adaptation.
