  • ASTM Research Report RR:D02-1744

At the December 2010 meeting of D02.07.D task group (TG 32) was formed to establish the precision of the 3,C results from D7346 Test method for No Flow Point of Petroleum Products and the relative bias these results might have compared to D97 Test Method for Pour Point of Petroleum Products. D7346 determines the No Flow Point with a resolution of 0.1C and can round that temperature to the next warmer 3,C interval. Other Pour Point test methods similarly determine first the No Flow Point, then report the temperature found 3,C warmer. An interlaboratory test program was designed and presented to D02.07.D which eventually consisted of 12 laboratories participating using D7346, and 12 laboratories participating using D97. As in most ILS, not all of the participating laboratories returned data resulting in a final total of 11 laboratories for D7346 and 10 laboratories for D97. The samples that were included consisted of, 6 fuels, 5 base oils (mineral and synthetic), and 9 finished lubricants (mineral and synthetic) covering the expected Pour Point range of +15 to - 60,C. The samples were obtained from 7 different suppliers. The samples were shipped as blind duplicates and coded such that the duplicate sample was unknown.

  • ASTM Research Report RR:G01-1024

G69 test method was originally published as a technical paper in 1941 and has been in continuous use since as a rapid and simple method to determine the solid solution content of certain alloying elements in aluminum alloys and primarily heat-treatable alloys. A series of inter-laboratory tests were begun in 1976 to measure the solution potentials of aluminum alloys. The purpose of these tests was: 1) to determine if the procedure was sufficiently reproducible to allow it to be written as a standard test method and 2) to determine whether alternative pretreatment methods were acceptable. These tests continued through 1986. A standard practice was approved in 1981, using the time honored mechanical abrasion with dry #320 grade aluminum oxide followed by polishing with #00 steel wool. A negative in 1981 was resolved with the proviso that a round robin test program be conducted to determine whether chemical pretreatments could be used instead of the laborious mechanical pretreatment. A previous research report, G01-1015, was prepared using the data from the ILS, but it failed to incorporate the results for four of the alloys and the calculations were in error. This report presents the results of all of these tests, including the 1976 data that was used to support the G69-81 standard, and round robin testing conducted in 1983, 1985 and 1986 on chemical pretreatments.

  • ASTM Research Report RR:D02-1740

At the June 2010 meeting of D02.07.D a limited interlaboratory study was approved to establish confidence in revisions to the apparatus utilized in test methods D5771 and D5950. A newer model of apparatus has been in use for several years which utilizes an internal cooling source, the methods currently reference cooling being supplied from an external source. While there are no other differences in the apparatus and test conditions, the committee agreed that a small study using at least five instruments and five samples in duplicate spanning the temperature range of the precision would be sufficient to establish the confidence with the internal cooling source version. The design of the study eventually resulted in nine total samples and six laboratories each for the external cooling (CPP97) and the internal cooling (CPP 5Gs) apparatus using D5950, Standard Test Method for Pour Point of Petroleum Products (Automatic Tilt Method) and five total samples and six laboratories each for the external cooling (CPP97) and the internal cooling (CPP 5Gs) apparatus using D5771 Standard Test Method for Cloud Point of Petroleum Products (Optical Detection Stepped Cooling Method). The samples were a variety of fuels and lubricants covering the range of temperatures from , 60 to +10,C, with the precision range of the test methods being from -56 to +34,C. The higher temperature samples, above +34,C, were unable to be located. The samples were shipped as blind duplicates and coded such that the duplicate sample was unknown, and no two labs had the same sample coding. When the samples were tested by D5950, two complete sets with different codes were shipped to allow testing by the typical 3,C interval and also at the 1,C Interval.

Interlaboratory Study 702 was conducted to establish a precision statement for D4944, Field Determination of Water Moisture Content of Soil by the Calcium Carbide Gas Pressure Tester. This Round Robin Test was conducted by the Florida Department of Transportation (FLDOT) at their State Materials Office in Gainesville, FL. Specifically a round robin test program was conducted June 14, 2007 by eight DOT technicians determining water contents of processed soil using calcium carbide gas pressure testers (commonly called ,Speedy Moisture Tester,) and comparing to an oven dried determination using portions of each test specimen. The FLDOT permits the use of nuclear gauges for determining the wet density of compacted earthworks, however, with the exception of aggregate base material, the associated in-situ water content is determined with the use of a gas pressure tester of the type specified in ASTM D4944.

A method is presented for the multielement determination of trace metals in crude oils using inductively coupled plasma - atomic emission spectrometry. The samples are diluted with an organic solvent before the measurements. Metallo-organic standards are used as calibration standards. Use of internal standard is mandatory in the analysis. The precision of the analysis was established by conducting an Interlaboratory Study including 18 crude oil samples and involving 16 laboratories. Three each NIST Standard Reference Materials and ASTM ILCP crude oils were also included to compare the bias of the new method against the established ASTM test methods such as D5185, D5708 or D5863. Nickel, vanadium, iron, and sulfur were quantitatively determined. Several other trace elements were below the detection limits of the method.

  • ASTM Research Report RR:F07-1009

Research Report F07-1009 presents the results of an internal laboratory study designed to produce reflectivity measurement data suitable for supporting an interim Precision and Bias section for ASTM Standard Test Method F1252. A total of three transparent samples were measured repeatedly by one laboratory to make an estimate of the repeatability and reproducibility that might be expected from a multi-laboratory, Interlaboratory Study. The reflectivity of one sample was measured from each side since it was coated with a partially reflective coating on one side. Also, each sample/side was measured using two different incidence/reflectance angles (20 and 30 degrees). The samples ranged in nominal reflectivity of approximately 0.08 (8 percent) to 0.34 (34 percent). Three separate reflectivity measurements were made of each sample/side/angle using the procedure presented in F1252-08. After all samples were measured, the measurement set-up was disassembled and then reassembled for a repeat measurement (this was intended to partially simulate the effect that one might expect if a different laboratory made the next measurement set). Once the equipment was reassembled, another trio of measurements was made on each sample/side/angle. A total of eight measurement sets were made on each sample over several days. The data were analyzed using ASTM E691 as a guide and values for repeatability and reproducibility for each sample/side/angle were calculated.

Following reports of the use of a modified lid and cup mechanism by one D93 apparatus manufacturer, a request was made to use ASTM Crosscheck data to statistically assess whether this caused any significant differences to results. Crosscheck data was collected from tests predominately using Procedure B and the modified locking mechanism, covering flash points from 70 to 210 ,C. Multiple sample comparisons were made on the data by a CS94 statistician using scatter plots, and box and whisker plots. A revision was sought to modify the D93 method to allow modified lid and cup locking mechanisms. However it was thought that allowing generic changes could affect the integrity of the method and that a specific research would be a better vehicle to describe the evaluated changes.

Test Methods D2699 and D2700 utilize the same instrumentation to detect and measure knock caused by auto ignition of the air/fuel mixture in the CFR engine. The current system utilizes a 501C detonation meter to accept and condition the electrical signal produced by the detonation pickup and to provide an output signal to an analog knockmeter that displays the intensity of the knock signal. Because of projected unavailability of critical components for the 501C meter, a new knock measurement system was developed by the producer of the CFR engine, Dresser Waukesha. The new system accepts the same electrical signal from the same detonation pickup, but uses computer software to process the signal and measure the knock intensity. In this report, the new system is referred to as the New Digital Knock Measurement System, the Digital Panel and simply the Panel. This interlaboratory study (ILS) was undertaken in 2009 with two stated objectives: a. to determine if there is any statistically observable systemic bias between the 501C and the New Digital Knock Measurement System and b. to determine if there is any statistically observable difference in precision between the 501C and the New Digital Knock Measurement System.

The precision of this test method is based on an interlaboratory study of D1002-05, Standard Test Method for Apparent Shear Strength of Single-Lap- Joint Adhesively Bonded Metal Specimens by Tension Loading (Metal-to-Metal), conducted in 2006. Eleven laboratories tested four different adhesive / substrate combinations for calculated failing load, percent adhesion to metal, and percent cohesion of adhesive. Every test result represents an individual determination. The laboratories were asked to report five replicate test results from each of two different times (a.m. and p.m.) for every adhesive / substrate combination. Following the initial data review, and internal investigations by the participants, qualified data from only five of the laboratories were utilized in determining the final precision statistics. Practice E 691 was followed for the design and analysisof the data, the details describing the distinct data populations and outliers that were identified are given in ASTM Research Report No. D14-1017.

Report RR: D02-1688 presents the results of an interlaboratory study used to establish the precision and bias statement for ASTM D7043, Standard Test Method for Indicating Wear Characteristics of Non-Petroleum and Petroleum Hydraulic Fluids in a Constant Volume Vane Pump. This report uses data from 30 tests of reference fluids from four independent laboratories to demonstrate the repeatability of D7043. A second Interlaboratory Study, which is intended to demonstrate reproducibility, will be concluded in the near future. The laboratories in this study periodically run a reference fluid in order to verify that their D7043 apparatus is functioning properly. Each laboratory maintains a stock of reference fluid, from a single batch, which is compatible with their apparatus and which does not require extensive flushing or rebuilding of their test apparatus prior to the running of a test. Each laboratory determines for themselves which fluid type and formulation best suits their needs. All data from a fifth lab was excluded when it was discovered that their reference fluid was not from a single batch. In addition, a test result from another laboratory was excluded since it fell significantly outside the norm but did correctly uncover a problem with the apparatus which was subsequently identified and corrected.

In contrast to all simulated distillation methods, response factors are obtained in this method and used to calibrate on a volume basis. In addition to the boiling point distribution, the precision for the analysis of the gases contained in these samples (propane, isobutane, n-butane, and isopentane) are also included. The method is intended to replace D3710.

  • ASTM Research Report RR:D19-1183

This ASTM Research Report includes the results of two studies performed to validate ASTM D7575. The earlier study was a single-lab validation involving three phases of testing of real-world samples containing oil and grease to estimate single-laboratory precision, and comparing the results to those of an existing oil and grease method, EPA 1664A. The first phase involved testing seven different collections of one matrix in triplicate, the second phase involved testing five other matrices in triplicate, and the third phase involved testing two matrices seven times each. D7575 was found to provide results that were not statistically different from EPA 1664 at the 95% confidence level. Single laboratory precision results from this study were later superseded by results of the more recent mutli-laboratory validation, which determined inter- and intra-laboratory precision and quality control acceptance limits. This validation involved testing three real-world matrices in Youden concentration pairs at twelve independent laboratories. The range of concentrations covered from double the expected lower reporting limit to half the upper reporting limit. The overall average relative standard deviation was found to be 13.1% and the single-operator relative standard deviation was found to be 9.7%.

  • ASTM Research Report RR:E01-1111

This ASTM Research Report covers interlaboratory testing of the Acid Neutralization Potential Acidity (ANPA) titration for ores and related materials to be included in the E-1915 series of methods which for the standardized static testing used for the prediction of acid rock drainage (ARD) and metal leaching (ML). The titration method is a simplified, automatable version of the Modified Sobek neutralization potential titration methods which eliminates the need for the qualitative fizz rating by using the pH and carbonate carbon content of the sample to select the proper acid digestion conditions for the test samples. A total of eight laboratories participated in the interlaboratory testing which used calibration mixtures containing sand and calcium carbonate to set quality control limits for implementation of the method and five certified reference materials which can be used to verify proper method implementation. A limited number of laboratories also measured acid-base accounting reference materials for bias determination.

This Research Report presents results of an Interlaboratory Study (ILS #298) to develop precision data for ASTM D7112-05a, Standard Test method for Determining Stability and Compatibility of Heavy Fuel Oils and Crude Oils by Heavy Fuel Oil Stability Analyzer (Optical Detection). D7112 uses the Finnish Measurement Systems Limited PORLA Heavy and Crude Oil Stability and Compatibility Analyzer. Five operators used 3 instruments at one test site to evaluate 11 samples covering a range of heavy fuel oils, various refinery residues, and crude oils to determine repeatability precision for P, Pa, Po, and FR1/5, [where the P value or peptizability is an indication of the stability or available solvency power of an oil with respect to precipitation of asphaltenes, Pa is the P-value of an asphaltene , the peptizability or ability of an asphaltene to remain colloidally dispersed, Po is the P-value of an oil matrix, and FR1/5 is the flocculation ratio at a dilution of 5 mL of xylene and n-heptane solvent mixture to 1 g of oil.] Statistical evaluation of the data also gives the recommended precision range for each parameter.
