This recommendation describes the format for exchanging 2D CAD data when planning facilities. It is based on the ISO10303-214 standard entitled "Core data for automotive mechanical design processes" [1]. The name STEP-CDS refers on the one hand to the basis as ISO10303 Standard or Standard for the Exchange of Product model data, on the other hand to its use as a Construction Drawing Subset.
Together with the aforementioned ISO standard, this recommendation describes the basis for high-quality implementations by system providers. Due to copyright rights of ISO, not all information required for implementations can be reproduced in this VDA recommendation.
The Express specification of the STEP-CDS (see Chapter 2.3) has been successfully implemented for 5 CAD systems. These implementations have shown that a high-quality CAD data exchange is achieved on the basis of STEP-CDS. It is therefore recommended to use STEP-CDS as a neutral 2D CAD exchange format.
