A Computational Approach To Evaluate Surface Integrity Of Glass Ceramics

Détails

The brittle fracture and high failure sensitivity of ceramics pose challenges to produce intricate and complex shapes such as dental crowns. This paper presents a new approach to carry out quality assurance for machines products made of glass ceramics through the use of computer modeling and simulation. The modeling is based on fracture mechanics to capture the brittle fracture and quasi-plastic deformation modes observed in material removal with explicit stipulation for incorporation of variation of machining conditions and material parameters. By simulating the chip formation process to cover a distance sufficient for information gathering, assessments of surface irregularities and sub-surface fracture are made for the evaluation of surface integrity. An application of simulation results on fabricating ceramic-made dental crowns is presented.
