ASTM Research Report RR:D02-1758
Historically most commercially-available spark-ignition engine fuels have contained no or relatively low concentrations of oxygenated compounds, e.g., until recently, such fuels sold in the U.S. contained ethanol at concentrations of 10 volume-% or less. However, because of recent government action to encourage greater use of renewable fuel components, the concentration of ethanol in spark-ignition engine fuels is expected to increase in the U.S and other regions. Because of their limited production in the past, little is known about the applicability to these higher ethanol fuels of the standard laboratory tests that have traditionally been used to measure the properties of spark-ignition engine fuels. One such property is the octane rating of the fuel, which is measured by ASTM D2699, ,Standard Test Method for Research Octane Number of Spark-Ignition Engine Fuel,, and ASTM D2700, ,Standard Test Method for Motor Octane Number of Spark-Ignition Engine Fuel., Octane testing of fuels containing more than 10 volume-% ethanol has been quite limited in the past, and little is known about the precision of these test methods when applied to higher ethanol content blends. This inter-laboratory test program was therefore undertaken to assess the applicability and precision of D2699 and D2700 when these methods are used to determine octane ratings of the higher ethanol fuels expected in the near future. More specifically, the purposes of this inter-laboratory test program were: a. to demonstrate that test methods D2699 and D2700 as currently practiced are applicable to spark-ignition engine fuels containing up to 25 volume-% ethanol, and b. to determine the precision of D2699 and D2700 when fuels containing up to 25 volume-% ethanol are tested.

At the December 2010 meeting of D02.07.D task group (TG 32) was formed to establish the precision of the 3,C results from D7346 Test method for No Flow Point of Petroleum Products and the relative bias these results might have compared to D97 Test Method for Pour Point of Petroleum Products. D7346 determines the No Flow Point with a resolution of 0.1C and can round that temperature to the next warmer 3,C interval. Other Pour Point test methods similarly determine first the No Flow Point, then report the temperature found 3,C warmer. An interlaboratory test program was designed and presented to D02.07.D which eventually consisted of 12 laboratories participating using D7346, and 12 laboratories participating using D97. As in most ILS, not all of the participating laboratories returned data resulting in a final total of 11 laboratories for D7346 and 10 laboratories for D97. The samples that were included consisted of, 6 fuels, 5 base oils (mineral and synthetic), and 9 finished lubricants (mineral and synthetic) covering the expected Pour Point range of +15 to - 60,C. The samples were obtained from 7 different suppliers. The samples were shipped as blind duplicates and coded such that the duplicate sample was unknown.

ASTM Research Report RR:G01-1024
G69 test method was originally published as a technical paper in 1941 and has been in continuous use since as a rapid and simple method to determine the solid solution content of certain alloying elements in aluminum alloys and primarily heat-treatable alloys. A series of inter-laboratory tests were begun in 1976 to measure the solution potentials of aluminum alloys. The purpose of these tests was: 1) to determine if the procedure was sufficiently reproducible to allow it to be written as a standard test method and 2) to determine whether alternative pretreatment methods were acceptable. These tests continued through 1986. A standard practice was approved in 1981, using the time honored mechanical abrasion with dry #320 grade aluminum oxide followed by polishing with #00 steel wool. A negative in 1981 was resolved with the proviso that a round robin test program be conducted to determine whether chemical pretreatments could be used instead of the laborious mechanical pretreatment. A previous research report, G01-1015, was prepared using the data from the ILS, but it failed to incorporate the results for four of the alloys and the calculations were in error. This report presents the results of all of these tests, including the 1976 data that was used to support the G69-81 standard, and round robin testing conducted in 1983, 1985 and 1986 on chemical pretreatments.

ASTM Research Report RR:D02-1740
At the June 2010 meeting of D02.07.D a limited interlaboratory study was approved to establish confidence in revisions to the apparatus utilized in test methods D5771 and D5950. A newer model of apparatus has been in use for several years which utilizes an internal cooling source, the methods currently reference cooling being supplied from an external source. While there are no other differences in the apparatus and test conditions, the committee agreed that a small study using at least five instruments and five samples in duplicate spanning the temperature range of the precision would be sufficient to establish the confidence with the internal cooling source version. The design of the study eventually resulted in nine total samples and six laboratories each for the external cooling (CPP97) and the internal cooling (CPP 5Gs) apparatus using D5950, Standard Test Method for Pour Point of Petroleum Products (Automatic Tilt Method) and five total samples and six laboratories each for the external cooling (CPP97) and the internal cooling (CPP 5Gs) apparatus using D5771 Standard Test Method for Cloud Point of Petroleum Products (Optical Detection Stepped Cooling Method). The samples were a variety of fuels and lubricants covering the range of temperatures from , 60 to +10,C, with the precision range of the test methods being from -56 to +34,C. The higher temperature samples, above +34,C, were unable to be located. The samples were shipped as blind duplicates and coded such that the duplicate sample was unknown, and no two labs had the same sample coding. When the samples were tested by D5950, two complete sets with different codes were shipped to allow testing by the typical 3,C interval and also at the 1,C Interval.

An Interlaboratory Study was conducted to establish a precision statement for F1930, Test Method for Evaluation of Flame Resistant Clothing for Protection Against Flash Fire Simulations Using an Instrumented Manikin. Seven laboratories in four different countries were involved. One laboratory used two different types of instrumentation, so this second approach appears as an eight laboratory. There were four test conditions, with three specimens to be tested at each condition. The test conditions were: Condition 1: 3 second exposure at 84 kW/m2 with the manikin dressed only in the test coverall. Condition 2: 4 second exposure at 84 kW/m2 with the manikin dressed only in the test coverall. Condition 3: 4 second exposure at 84 kW/m2 with the manikin dressed in 100% cotton T-shirt and briefs under the test coverall. Condition 4: 5 second exposure at 84 kW/m2 with the manikin dressed in 100% cotton T-shirt and briefs under the test coverall.

This interlaboratory testing project was designed to determine the typical variability to be expected in scratch width measurements on two materials of varying resistance to scratching, namely, polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and cartridge brass (70 wt% Cu-30 wt% Zn). This study aimed to establish a repeatability statement for G171. The standard involves producing a series of three linear scratches at constant normal force and speed with a diamond stylus, and then using optical measurement of the width of the scratches to calculate a scratch hardness number (HS).

The precision of this test method is based on an inter-laboratory study (ILS) conducted in 2010. The ILS was performed by seven laboratories using pervious concrete mixtures proportioned using local materials. Each laboratory prepared three batches (designed at void contents of 18, 20, and 22% respectively) and performed three replicate tests per batch (a test includes three individual specimens). Five of the laboratories had 2 different technicians performing the test.
