This chapter provides an overview of AMI technology, capabilities, and applications. It begins with a brief history of electric metering technology to help frame how AMI creates a different working environment for Load Research and load analysis. Because AMI technology and configurations vary widely (and will continue to evolve as AMI penetration increases), the remainder of this chapter provides a broad characterization of technology features. Some guidance on how to incorporate AMI into Load Research analysis is also provided.
