Détails

Surfacing Materials
Scope : Surfacing is an industrial fabricating process defined as the application of a layer or layers of metal to a surface by welding, brazing, or thermal spraying to obtain desired properties or dimensions. The process is used to meet service requirements such as corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and dimensional control, or to provide necessary metallurgical properties.1, 2 Surfacing materials are represented in this chapter by the many types of filler metals and electrodes applied by shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), flux cored arc welding (FCAW), submerged arc welding (SAW), laser beam welding (LBW), oxyfuel gas welding (OFW) processes, brazing (B), and the thermal spraying (THSP) processes. This chapter covers the fundamentals of surfacing, surfacing materials and processes, operational variables, the metallurgical properties of surfacing materials, and typical applications. Other sections include the economics of surfacing, and safe practices. The Bibliography and the Supplementary Reading List provide resources for further study of surfacing processes and materials.
