Buckling and Post Buckling of Plate Girders in Bending

€54.00

Details

A statical and statistical analysis based on previous experiments regarding the stability of plate girders subject to bending performed by Konrad Basler and others, at Fritz Engineering Laboratory, Lehigh University, Pennsylvania (Reference [2]) determined the following:

For stability of an isolated web panel in bending, the equation given by Professor Dr. Timoshenko (Reference [1], pages 377?378) is demonstrated as accurate for design. However, a new equation has been introduced with the same degree of accuracy, but with different parameters, that may also be used for design.
Experimentally and theoretically, the thickness of web plate in the plate girder subjected to bending has a minor effect on the bearing capacity of plate girders in bending. In other words, the buckling of web plate has a minor effect on the plastic instability of plate girders in bending.
The local buckling and lateral buckling of the compression flange drastically affects the bearing capacity of plate girders in bending.
The lateral buckling of the compression flange correlates to its buckling length outside the plane of plate girders.
An empirical equation for the general plastic instability of plate girders in bending has been introduced with sufficient accuracy for use in design.
