The Volume 06.01 presents the latest test methods for the chemical analysis of paints and painting materials, including the determination of volatile, non-volatile substances, pigments, water content and other constituents. Other standards focus on accelerated testing, physical properties of applied paint films, such as film thickness and adhesion, physical strength, resistance to chemicals and environmental factors, and properties. physics and optics of liquid paints.

In addition, volume 06.01 includes tests and practices on color and appearance analysis, color order systems, fluorescence, high visibility materials for personal safety, measurement of image-based color, photoluminescent safety markings, retro-reflective materials, spectrophometry and colorimetry, and visual methods.

The volume 06.02 covers architectural finishes and paint products, such as road surfaces, marine coatings, industrial protective coatings and masonry treatments. The standards examine applications of paint in factories, coils of metallic carbon, coatings on preformed products, printing inks, artist paints and paint application tools. Other areas include determining resistance to graffiti and definitions of problems that develop with prints as a result of deficiencies in the ink, substrate or press.

Application and evaluation tests of coatings and protective coatings in power generation facilities, as well as durability standards for coatings and pipe linings are also included in this volume.

Le volume 06.03 includes specifications and test methods that establish the property requirements for various pigments, including white, black, bronze, blue and red; resins; and polymers.

Other standards relate to pine chemicals, mainly rosins, cellulose and cellulose derivatives, inks and hydrocarbon resins.

Le volume 06.04 presents specifications that establish standard property requirements for various solvents, including aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones and esters. The specifications are accompanied by tests that define standard procedures for performing physical and chemical tests on solvents and for determining solubility and miscibility. Others relate to aromatic hydrocarbons and associated chemicals, excluding those used as fuels or lubricants.

The ASTM DO1 Committee on Paint and Coatings, Materials and related applications was formed in 1902. The D01 meets twice a year, in January and June, with around 125 members attending over four days technical meetings. The committee, which has approximately 610 members, has currently competence over more than 675 standards, published in the annual book ASTM standards, volumes 6.01, 6.02, 6.03 and 6.04. D01 has 30 technical sub-committees which exercise their competence on these standards. Information on the structure of this sub-committee and the portfolio D01 approved standards and work in progress are available in the list of sub-committees, standards and work items below. These standards have played and continue to play a preeminent role in all aspects important to industry, including: classification, sampling, preparation, components, application requirements, end-use analysis, quality assurance and performance.
