A new system for cutting tool identification to ensure an accident-free machining operation is proposed in this paper. The basic concept of this system is to automatically obtain the cutting tool information such as tool diameter, tool type, tool offset, and number of cutting edges before starting machining operation, and then to judge whether the installed tool is the right one required by CNC controller for a specific machining operation. A CCD vision system with a general-purpose robot is used to obtain the cutting tool information through analyzing the tool images and the obtained information is then compared with the correct tool information stored in CNC controller.
