  • ASTM Research Report RR:D02-1688

Report RR: D02-1688 presents the results of an interlaboratory study used to establish the precision and bias statement for ASTM D7043, Standard Test Method for Indicating Wear Characteristics of Non-Petroleum and Petroleum Hydraulic Fluids in a Constant Volume Vane Pump. This report uses data from 30 tests of reference fluids from four independent laboratories to demonstrate the repeatability of D7043. A second Interlaboratory Study, which is intended to demonstrate reproducibility, will be concluded in the near future. The laboratories in this study periodically run a reference fluid in order to verify that their D7043 apparatus is functioning properly. Each laboratory maintains a stock of reference fluid, from a single batch, which is compatible with their apparatus and which does not require extensive flushing or rebuilding of their test apparatus prior to the running of a test. Each laboratory determines for themselves which fluid type and formulation best suits their needs. All data from a fifth lab was excluded when it was discovered that their reference fluid was not from a single batch. In addition, a test result from another laboratory was excluded since it fell significantly outside the norm but did correctly uncover a problem with the apparatus which was subsequently identified and corrected.

  • ASTM Research Report RR:D19-1183

This ASTM Research Report includes the results of two studies performed to validate ASTM D7575. The earlier study was a single-lab validation involving three phases of testing of real-world samples containing oil and grease to estimate single-laboratory precision, and comparing the results to those of an existing oil and grease method, EPA 1664A. The first phase involved testing seven different collections of one matrix in triplicate, the second phase involved testing five other matrices in triplicate, and the third phase involved testing two matrices seven times each. D7575 was found to provide results that were not statistically different from EPA 1664 at the 95% confidence level. Single laboratory precision results from this study were later superseded by results of the more recent mutli-laboratory validation, which determined inter- and intra-laboratory precision and quality control acceptance limits. This validation involved testing three real-world matrices in Youden concentration pairs at twelve independent laboratories. The range of concentrations covered from double the expected lower reporting limit to half the upper reporting limit. The overall average relative standard deviation was found to be 13.1% and the single-operator relative standard deviation was found to be 9.7%.

An interlaboratory study (round robin) has been conducted by the RPVOT Working Group of D02.09.0C to determine the precision of the D2272 method on a wide range of test oils responding to oxidation in from 100 to 3500 minutes. This round robin included oils containing various older and modern chemistries. All four base stock groups, I through IV, were included in this study. In addition to the older liquid RR: D02-1666 bath approach, the Quantum Oxidation Test was also used to test equivalence in the method. Data from sixteen laboratories was collected testing eight different oils. Eight of the labs ran the liquid RPVOT and eight ran the Quantum Oxidation Test. The version of the method used was Revision 7 for D2272 RR 2008. This incorporated both the liquid and Quantum Oxidation Test protocols. Precision was determined for each individual protocol and for the both forms of instrumentation combined.

Ten laboratories participated in the study. The bias is defined as the difference between the predicted and measured thermal resistance values of a product. Two manufacturers supplied 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 inch products. The thermal resistance of these products were measured after 1, 2, 3 and 5 years and compared to the predicted values. It was estimated that the precision of the measurements and the calculation of LTTR values, and hence the bias, were reasonably good. In general, the test procedure over predicts the actual thermal resistance of the products used in this round robin.

Interlaboratory Study 328 was conducted to establish a precision statement for D6751, Standard Test Method for Determining of Fuel Filter Blocking Potential of Biodiesel (B100) Blend Stock by Cold Soak Laboratory Filtration. The prime objective of the Operability Task Force was in part to assess suitability and effectiveness of the proposed ASTM Cold Soak Filtration method in minimizing the risk of filter plugging in biodiesel blends. The data from this Operability Task Force was used to determine an interim Precision for the proposed ASTM Test Method for Cold Soak Filtration. This report is an attempt to supply such an analysis based on well-established methodologies. Subsequent to test method publication a more thorough round robin is planned. Nine laboratories tested seven fuel types.

  • ASTM Research Report RR:D07-1005

This research report provides information about the ASTM interlaboratory study (ILS) of precision of ASTM D198 test method for the flexural or bending modulus of elasticity (MOE) of lumber under third-pointing loading. The study was conducted during 2006-2007 in sixteen laboratories in the USA and Canada in accordance with Practice E691. The scope of the ILS was limited to determination of the apparent MOE of 2x4 size materials using the deflection of the beam,s neutral axis at the mid-span measurements of the load head displacement, similar to the D4761 edgewise bending test method under third-point loading. The test materials involved a limited sample from three product families: machine stress rated (MSR) lumber, laminated veneer lumber (LVL) and laminated strand lumber (LSL). Five specimens of each material were tested in a round robin fashion in each laboratory. Four test results were obtained for each piece of material and orientation, edgewise and flatwise. Span-to-depth ratios of 18 and 21were used in the edgewise and flatwise orientations, respectively. In addition, a steel reference bar (RHS) of comparable stiffness was tested to help tracking any possible changes in the stiffness of the wood materials from repeated loading and to serve as a reference for tracking potential changes in the specimen mass from moisture content changes.

This study evaluates the performance characteristics (precision, bias, linearity) of immunoenzymetric assays that are designed to quantify 4 major Hevea brasiliensis (Hev b) allergens (Hev b 1, 3, 5 and 6.02) in latex extracts under field use conditions by following American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM) protocols. This report pertains to D7427. Methods: Quantification of latex allergens in 56 latex glove extracts was performed by 6 laboratories using two-site immunoenzymetric assays and reagents (capture and detection antibodies, standards and controls) provided by one commercial source. Ten glove extracts were analyzed for each of four Hev b allergen concentrations on multiple days to evaluate assay precision and bias and 4 extracts were analyzed at multiple dilutions to evaluate assay linearity (parallelism). Data was collated and analyzed at two coordinating sites.

This ASTM Research Report combines data from two different studies supporting ASTM D7416-09. The more recent reproducibility study involves testing thirteen different in-service lubricant samples through seven different five part integrated tester laboratories, each with a different operator. The earlier repeatability study involves testing two different in-service oil samples thirty times each in a single five-part integrated tester laboratory. All samples were tested using the multiple measurement sensors within the five part integrated tester. In addition to reporting of quantified measurements, diagnostic interpretation of that data is also reported in score values for wear status, contamination status, and chemistry status for the each sample data set.
