The precision data for D4953 contained 15 samples, 7 were hydrocarbon only and 8 were fuels containing hydrocarbon-oxygenate blends with a range of oxygen content from 2 to 6% and a vapor pressure range from 41 to 97 kPa (6 to 14 psi). The vapor pressure of these samples was determined by Procedures A and B. A total of 31 laboratories participated in the program, 18 performed Procedure A and 13 Procedure B. Vapor pressure of the hydrocarbon only samples and two samples containing methyl t-butyl ether was also determined by Method D 323.

The purpose of this report is to report estimates of single-operator (i.e. within laboratory) precision and multilaboratory (i.e. between laboratory) precision, as defined in paragraphs 6.2 and 6.3 of ASTM C 802- 87, for the proposed pozzolanic-activity-with-cement test that has been under development in ASTM C09.03.10. Data were derived from the results of two interlaboratory studies. These studies are the last two in a series of five and were conducted with the method in its currently proposed form. The first three studies were developmental, consequently do not represent the currently proposed form and were not useful for precision estimates. Part 4 of the interlaboratory study was completed in 1987, Part 5 was completed in 1988. The data were analyzed according to ASTM C 802-87. The precision statement was prepared according to ASTM C 670-87. Part 4 of the interlaboratory study included three fly ashes: a Class C fly ash, a Class F fly ash, and an unclassified Class F fly ash. The latter material was known, from other experience, to perform poorly and was included to verify that the proposed method would be sensitive to such a material. Twelve laboratories participated in this study. Part 5 of the interlaboratory study included one Class C fly ash and one Class N pozzolan. Eight laboratories participated. Test ages were 7 and 28 days in both studies.

The information in this report will serve as a basic for adding precision statements to the methods and the report will serve as a Research Report available from ASTM Headquarters for people interested in performing these tests. The original test program had five laboratories willing to provide data, but two of the laboratories subsequently withdrew and data was only available from three laboratories. This report presents the data and calculated repeatability intervals I (r) and reproducibility intervals I (R) for the test method on compressibility, B331. These intervals or ranges are needed to construct the mandatory precision statements for B331. The interpretation of I (r), repeatability interval is as follows: on the basis of test error alone, the difference in absolute value, of two test results obtained in the same laboratory on the same material will be expected to exceed I (r) only about 5% of the time. Thus, if such a difference is found to be larger than I(r), there is reason to question one or both of the test results. Similarly, I(R), describes the difference between single tests done in separate laboratories. If the absolute difference between two such tests on the same material exceeds I(R), there is reason to question the results of one or both tests, because I(R) is exceeded only 5% of the time.
