Details

A procedure has been developed for the determination of pad bearing performance by means of nonlinear stiffness and damping pad functions. These functions describe the pad reaction for any location of the journal. The performance of the complete bearing is then computed from an assembly of the individual pad functions. This yields a complete nonlinear description of the bearing forces. This procedure may be used in two ways: (a) to tabulate the functions for an adequate set of design parameters for the pads and from them compute the performance of the bearing, (b) to incorporate these functions into a nonlinear numerical analysis of the dynamic response of the rotor-bearing system. Stiffness and damping pad functions can be determined either numerically or experimentally. Here they were determined experimentally on a test rig built for this purpose.
