This standard specifies the requirements for optical measurements of semiconductor light sources emitting incoherent optical radiation. Semiconductor light sources in terms of this standard are single light-emitting diodes of the type LED (inorganic) and OLED (organic) as well as combinations of several objects of the same kind in different two- or three-dimensional structures, in the following differentiated and defined as arrays, cluster, modules, lamps and luminaires. Special attention is given to the geometrical configurations, the electrical and thermal operating conditions and the measurement of the photometric, colorimetric and spectral-radiometric quantities. In addition new characteristic quantities and related measurement methods are defined to describe the special properties of semiconductor light sources and the limitations of testing practicability during production. The standard does not specify semiconductor emitters for coherent optical radiation (laser) as well as limiting values for the assessment of radiation protection. This standard can and should be used where operation, arrangement and general measurement methods for optical characteristics are concerned. The standard does not apply for the illumination produced by semiconductor emitters. The characteristics of semiconductor emitters extensively differ from those of incandescent, halogen and discharge lamps. The operation and the measurement of their optical characteristics require the definition of additional quantities and special operating conditions. These additions and their differentiation to existing specifications and definitions are stated in this standard.
